N40 - Sky Manor- An Original New Jersey Aviation Country Club!
Flying Journalism, Contributing Writer & Photographer

What is Sky Manor? It's a hidden gem located about 60 miles west of New York City. Sky Manor opened up in the 1940's as an aviation resort getaway. It featured a recreation building, a pool, and a restaurant. It is rumored that Johnny Carson stayed there a lot during it's heyday of popularity. Flying out of Sky Manor boasts beautiful views of the Delaware River, Philadelphia skyline, and New York skyline.

The deer are a very popular sight in the Sky Manor area.
An original article from the 1940's. Sky Manor was known as "a modern Skytel in a rural setting - a place to relax..." note the pool in the picture, it was a spring fed pool which was used for ice skating during the winter. The pool was removed some years ago.
The rotating beacon is a piece of history on display next to the cafe and the flight school.
Historic aircraft are almost always present on the weekends. Sky Manor also has a long history of pilots making great accomplishments!

Sky Manor is a great airport for learning to fly. It is located between Philadelphia and New York's class B airspace. It is also conveniently located just east of Allentown P.A.'s class C airspace. Sky Manor had attracted students from all around the world. Many of them have learned to fly at Tom Kramer's flight school (Sky Beckons.) Tom and his wife JoAnn co-own and operate the flight school at the airport. Tom is dedicated to the preservation of the airport community and loves teaching people how to fly. Check out their website at www.skybeckons.com. A huge thanks to Tom and JoAnn for speaking with me and sharing their stories of how much they love Sky Manor.

This is JoAnn, she is also a pilot! she treats people like family at Sky Beckons! The flight school is where you can buy some cool N40 merchandise!
This is Tom Kramer, Tom has been actively teaching since 1990, and has landed at nearly 300+ airports in the contiguous United States. Tom is a gold seal CFI with thousands of hours of dual instruction given. Tom loves sharing the joy of general aviation with everyone.

We took a trip around the airport. One of the most notable icons of Sky Manor is the rotating beacon. The cafe is one of the best in the area. The cafe brings loads of people from all over because the food is so good. The vineyard next door is called Beneduce's vineyard. Many people on the way to the vineyard come to check out the airport and get a photo with one of the planes. It is great to see more people exposed to general aviation by proxy. Balloons Aloft is another organization on the airport that provides panoramic hot air balloon rides.

The Sky Manor airport has been privately owned since it opened (from it's humble grass strip beginnings to it's 2900 ft. modern paved runway.) The airport went for sale several years ago because the owner was going through financial hardship. The possibility of losing the airport forever donned on the Sky Manor community. The pilots took matters into their own hands to save the airport from destruction. Approximately 40 pilots came together to purchase the airport (this is truly an amazing story.) This is just a great example of what the aviation community can do when we all come together.

Student pilot and Sky Manor resident Sean gets the airplane ready for a fun flight to a nearby airport.
Sometimes on clear days, you can see the New York skyline.
The Delaware River always provides a great view. It separates New Jersey and Pennsylvania. Yes, it is the famous river George Washington crossed to surprise the Hessian troops during the American Revolution.
The countryside is filled with many private airstrips.
Historic homes are a popular sight. This house looks like it could have came from a fiction novel.

Sky Manor is an airpark community. The newly built homes are beautiful and reasonably priced for the area. You could make Sky Manor your new home and be part of the Sky Manor community. If you can't live near the airport, you could be a part of the community as well by volunteering with Flypups! Flypups is another organization based out of sky manor. They rescue animals from kill shelters. Visit flypups.org if you are interested in finding out more.

The runway is kept in pristine condition all year long.
The airpark is lined with wonderful homes and the street names are aviation themed. How cool would it be if Cirrus Pilots live on Cirrus lane?

On behalf of all pilots, a special thanks to the Sky Manor airport community. A huge thanks to Sky Beckons for sharing their collection of news articles. The community at Sky Manor is amazing to say the least. I can definitely say Sky Manor is "THE BEST LITTLE AIRPORT IN THE EAST." Check out the airport website at skymanorairport.com and don't forget "life is worth flying for."
