Wheels Up at 9AM
Dana Brejakova, Contributing Writer & Photographer

Don't we all know it, that Friday evening text landing on our screens lighting up our phone displays as well as our aviation loving hearts: "We are gonna be at the airport tomorrow, wheels up at 9AM". And just like that, receiving this type of text message set us for a marvelous Saturday spent among fellow aviators and friends again. Flying around the patch is always better and more fun when you have good company.

Getting together, taking the birds out for a spin, and munching on delicious homemade breakfast burritos, coffee, and sweets followed by all-things airplanes chit chat that could go as far as all day long is a real treat for us. I love when everything aligns so we can spend days like these. Good flying weather, good company, no hustles, no hurries, no worries, no stress, just flying around the patch and hanging out. I almost forgot how marvelous these days were. We used to hang out like this almost every other weekend. What happened to our airport weekends? Busy days, busy lives, permanent changes in daily schedules, and then some more busy days. However, nothing ever lasts forever and we were finally able to spend a whole Saturday the way we love it the most. But enough of yappin and let's check out the birds who decided to fluff their feathers during a beautiful Saturday morning.

While we were submerged in the depths of the preflight and checklists, we realized that many hangar doors were opened. Yup, nothing says "the weather is perfect" more than everyone getting airborne.
The runways were a little bit busier than usual and we were patiently waiting for our turn to take off.
And off we went. The mighty mountain that divides our town will never stop amazing me. The views are spectacular each and every time and each and every time I count my blessings.
After we enjoyed some flying "around the patch" that took approx. 30 minutes, we were turning base to land at a lovely spot. And what do you know, our friends were already there.
"Mirror, mirror on the wall, who has the best-looking spinner of them all?"
Simple and classy color theme on these two. You can never go wrong with a classic white with a blue stripe along the fuselage. So, who wore it better?
RV-6 adding a pop of color to our tiny gathering.
A few airborne birds flew over and rewarded us with lovely views while the all-things aviation lively debate was in full swing. Beautiful polished aluminum Cessna 170A was happily roaring in the sky and her glow almost blinded me. Great job restoring her, guys!
And look who came out to check us out. Beautiful WACO was positioning herself while the Aviat Husky was sticking her nose into the picture because she was getting all jealous about this gorgeous lady in red.
I could not help it, I had to get more color bursts of the RV-6. I am not a fan of busy paintjobs but this one looked pretty darn good.
"Winds are still calm, folks!", as our little friend and an expert in flying confirmed. What a lovely day!
Aviat-Husky (previously a little jealous about the gorgeous WACO) was inviting for a chitchat under her high wing.
Another happy roaring in the sky.
After the WACO was safely parked, everyone had to go and drool on this stunning looking airplane, me included.
What a spectacle! Seeing and hearing these classic bi-planes flying around is a real treat. Shout out to her owner for keeping her in such wonderful shape and for making a presence to join us for a little while.
As the crisp morning started turning into a very warm and sunny afternoon, it was time to fly back home. The Cessna 175 was about to take off to avoid convective heat induced turbulence, smart.

Believe it or not, we were having a very warm day and I even burnt my wrists on the sun trying to capture the birds out there. I cannot believe I am saying this in February! Well, that's Southwest weather for ya, folks.

Before the Cessna took off, I managed to snap a cool photo of the dash board ambiance where the beautiful Hawaiian Hula dancer was stretching between two headsets. She was probably getting ready for some dancing considering the rising temperatures.
Jimmy's gorgeous RV-8, this time I caught her in geometrical symmetry, was being repositioned because it was time to fly back and finish our chit chat at the T-hangars. Good times came back again.
