Back in the day, police would allow citizens to go for a "ride along." There were forms, of course, and rules to be followed. There were no guarantees that anything exciting might happen. There were also no guarantees that something too exciting might not happen. In the aviation realm, there have been similar ride-alongs. Sometimes reporters ride along on police department helicopters. Sometimes battlefield correspondents ride into the thick of the battle with the warriors. Occasionally, an author might travel to foreign lands to ride into the fray, as did Steinbeck.
