Over the years traveling and then later flying with Jimmy the Squirrel, I started noticing certain periodic patterns in biotopes across the continents. Just like the elements in the periodic table start resembling similarities after a while, the biotopes and ecosystems seem to do the same. When you go up North you will notice the biotopes at certain distance from the equator look very similar to the biotopes that are the same distance from equator down South. As if the equator acted like a giant mirror. None of this would have ever hit me if it was not for the bird's perspective. Applying this observation to the Southwest USA that is the same distance from the equator as north Africa, something happens to us from time to time. When we go bush-flying, sometimes we feel like we are in Africa without actually being in Africa. How many times the song from Toto, "Africa," popped in my head when we went bush flying in the desert? Enough times to create a small collection of Just like in Africa aerial shots. Read more…
