"THE FLIGHT TO FIGHT" - Taking Pink awareness to high altitudes
By Dana Brejakova, Contributing Editor & Photographer
Bold barrel decoration by the stage.

Several weeks ago, colorful flyers were dropped at the T-hangars in El Paso Airport and local small towns to announce quite a unique Fly-In at Fabens Airport, Texas.

Sunday, October 27th, turned the small airport in Fabens into a busy cultural spot inviting the local community to join the event, have a good time, and mainly to be less afraid and more educated about the topic of breast cancer awareness. With the presence of the Breast Cancer Society and the opportunity for visitors to donate to research, this very first West Texas Breast Cancer Awareness Fly-In was, indeed, efficiently up to its purpose.

The organizer, Daniel Barcena, a businessman based in El Paso, Texas and an avid aviator himself, hosted this event with the support of several big companies and local businesses as sponsors. As it was obvious to each and every visitor, Daniel did an outstanding job bringing the aviators together while securing a rich cultural program for all who came. In addition to the airplanes, visitors could also admire the timeless elegance of well-maintained classic cars and Corvettes that were lined up in breathtaking rows, letting the afternoon sun dance on their shiny bodies. A Halloween costume contest for kids, vendors selling themed merchandise together with cultural attractions including music and folkloric dances represented a solid guarantee of enjoyable and fun afternoon left noone bored.

Stunning lined-up Corvettes were stealing a lot of curious and admiring looks from the spectators.
What would this even be without being able to buy the right T-shirt?

That Sunday morning, Jimmy the Squirrel, Shep, and Dennis and me started our propellers and took off from El Paso to Fabens airport for a full stop to catch up with other aviators and friends, and make an appearance to support Daniel's hard work.

The poor Luscombe received a "warm" welcome from the desert spiky plant: go-heads. Nimble little sticky tricksters.
The first sparrows on the scene, bright shiny Cessna 180 parked in front of the hangar that belongs to University of Texas at El Paso – Center for space exploration and technology research (pretty awesome, huh?)
The fast birds row where RVs were lining up.
It is all about the colors, isn't it? Bright paintjob of this beautiful RV 6 was inviting for more than just one picture.

You know there is a pilot's briefing when there are way too many legs under one wing. In this case, the hosting wing (that was offering so much appreciated shadow) belonged to Aviat Husky A-1B owned by Jimmy the Squirrel.

Grumman Ag Cat (Showcat conversion) made an appearance with associated noise and smoke.

It is without doubt to say, the pink Sunday in Fabens airport was a success. Daniel's hard work paid off. Not only did it bring the community together it also sparked an idea to continue. Here is a toast to the organizers, sponsors, vendors, aviators, and talented performers: Let this first West Texas Breast Cancer Awareness Fly-In become a cultural tradition in West Texas and may it attract more visitors and popularity each year. Cheers.
