London Jet Noise - Part III
By Kevin Moore, Contributing Editor & Photographer
Watford, Ontario, Canada
The US Navy E-6 Mercury along the static line up
of aircraft on hand for Airshow London 2017.
Last week we were back at London International Airport for a second look at Airshow London 2017. Some of the aircraft included in Part II were the USAF F-16 & F-35, A-10, RCAF Buffalo, US Navy C-2 & E-2 and a few other aircraft. This week, we return to Airshow London for Part III and a look at some of the other aircraft that attended the show.
The SkyHawks opened the show with two jumpers, the first descending with the Stars & Stripes, left, during the US Anthem and the second with the Maple Leaf, right, during the Canadian Anthem.
The Canadian Forces parachute display team, the SkyHawks, put on a fine demonstration, including jumpers with both the Canadian and American flags opening the show as well as jumpers leg-locked in a spectacular decent to earth. The SkyHawks perform in shows across Canada and the US and are all highly trained members of the Canadian military.
Jerry Conley put the Vampire through its paces, showing off the lines
and the speed of the 70 year old jet fighter.
As mentioned in Part I, Jerry Conley from Vampire Airshows flew the beautiful de Havilland Vampire Mk 55, DH-115 in a graceful display, including rolls, high-speed and photo passes. The Vampire is equipped with the Rolls-Royce Goblin engine, originally known as the Halford.1 turbojet. The Vampire was the RAF's first single engine jet fighter, with the RAF taking the first delivery of the Vampire in 1946, too late to see action during World War II.
Randy W. Ball puts on a great show, especially with the big flame shooting out the back end of the Russian vintage jet fighter.
Also mentioned in Part I was Randy W. Ball and his MiG-17PF, lighting up the sky with that 15' flame ripping out the nozzle of the polished metal Cold War jet aircraft. The MiG-17 is a Russian built, sub-sonic fighter that first flew in 1950. It was developed from its predecessor, the MiG-15 of Korean War fame, but had a thinner, lighter wing with a slightly greater back-sweep than the MiG-15. Though the MiG-17 was a superior aircraft to the MiG-15, production was delayed in favour of the '15 and the MiG-17 never saw action during the Korean War. The first MiG-17s entered into service in 1952.
Pete McLeod always puts on a fantastic aerobatic display
in his colourful Red Bull Edge 540.
Canadian aerobatic pilot and Red Bull Racer, Pete McLeod, ripped up the sky in his beautiful Edge 540. Though Pete competes on the world stage, flying in Red Bull races, he loves flying aerobatic performances at airshows across Canada and the US. His Edge 540 is an extremely manoeuverable aircraft and can rip through the sky at speeds as fast as 265mph. Pete puts himself and the Edge through a rigorous, high-G performance that will get anyone's adrenaline pumping! When not flying aerobatics or Red Bull Racing, Pete enjoys time at home in either London, Ontario or in Canada's north in Red Lake, Ontario.
The US Air National Guard flew in one of the C-130 Hercules
transport aircraft for the static line up.
The Illinois Air National Guard flew in their C-130 Hercules for static display during the airshow. The C-130 has been a mainstay transport for the US military, as well as many other militaries, since it first saw service with the USAF in the 1950s. There have been numerous models and variants of the Hercules with more than 70 air forces around the world either still operating, or having operated, the many models of the aircraft for more than 60 years. The newer C-130J models are expected to be in service, around the world, for 20 years or more.
Known as "Gonzo," this de Havilland of Canada converted Dash-8, RCAF CT-142 serves a specialised purpose with the Canadian military.
The RCAF de Havilland Canada DHC-8, CT-142 Dash-8 "Gonzo" also made the trip to join the static line up. The CT-142 is a converted version of the airliner model of the Dash-8 and was adapted by Bombardier for navigational training in the late 1980s. It is used to train members of the RCAF as Air Combat Systems Officers and Airborne Electronic Sensor Operators as well as training members of air forces from around the world. On board are a host of training computers and, housed in that elongated nose, a large radar system, giving it the "Gonzo" moniker.
The RAAF flew in with their big Airbus A330, KC-30A tanker/transport.
The Royal Australian Air Force visited with their KC-30A multi-role, tanker & transport. The KC-30 is a highly modified Airbus A-330 airliner, capable of transferring more than 100 tonnes of fuel to the RAAFs F/A-18 Hornets and Super Hornets, E-7s, C-17s and even other KC-30 aircraft. The aircraft features include electronic warfare self-protection systems and advanced mission, communication and navigation systems. It is also capable of carrying 270 passengers, has under-floor cargo compartments that are capable of accommodating up to 34,000kg of both military and civilian cargo pallets and containers.
The US Coast Guard HC-144 Search & Rescue aircraft.
Another static line aircraft, this one from the US Coast Guard, that made the trip was the HC-144. Used by the US Coast Guard as a medium range search & rescue as well as maritime patrol aircraft, this Airbus designed aircraft has an endurance of over 8 hours with a short take off and landing capability. The USCG first took delivery of the HC-144 in December of 2006 with 13 operational aircraft serving with the USCG by early 2011 and a total of 18 by 2014. The HC-144 has a maximum speed of 272mph and a range of over 1800 miles.
P-51D Mustang, Bald Eagle, left, flew several passes after performing as part of the USAF Heritage Flight. Local aviation company, ITPS, had their beautiful Grumman Albatross, right, on hand for the static line up.
Two other aircraft on-hand for the show were the P-51D Mustang, Bald Eagle, which flew as part of the USAF Heritage Flight with the F-35 Lightning II and the International Test Pilot School (ITPS) Grumman Albatross. Though the Albatross was just static, it performed a training mission with ITPS pilots on media day and was captured on final after completing about an hour long sortie.
The Canadian Forces 431 Air Demonstration Squadron Snowbirds.
Rounding out the performers for Airshow London were the iconic and majestic Royal Canadian Air Force, Canadian Forces Snowbirds, 431 Air Demonstration Squadron. The team, and their Canadian built Canadair CT-114 Tutor aircraft, have been performing for crowds across Canada and the United States since the 1970s. They formally adopted the name Snowbirds on June 25, 1971 and were officially designated as the Canadian Forces Air Demonstration Team on January 15, 1975, becoming an official squadron on April 1, 1978. The Snowbirds entire team, from pilots to crews and all squadron members, are amongst the best Canadian ambassadors in the country. They are as proud of Canada as Canadians are of them.
Airshow London put on a great event in 2017 and it's looking like the 2018 show will be as good or better. Make your plans to attend next year!
Make plans to visit Airshow London in 2018 for a line up of fantastic aircraft from Canada, the US and other nations. If you like jet noise, if you like speed, if you like watching awesome displays of aircraft capabilities, then Airshow London is the place to be!
