Return to the Waterloo Skies

By Kevin Moore, Contributing Editor & Photographer
Watford, Ontario, Canada

One of the most popular aircraft that graces the sky over Waterloo is the Jet Aircraft Museum T-33 Silver Star, the Mako Shark. If you'd like to fly in this aircraft visit jetaircraftmuseum.ca or visit the JAM booth and purchase a 2015 Cash & Dream Flights Lottery Calendar and you could win a flight!

Once again this year, we'll review the upcoming Waterloo Airshow to see what's appearing in the skies above the airport for the 2014 airshow. They've changed the airshow weekend, but the show itself will go on as it has before but with the hope of much better weather.

June 28 & 29th is the Waterloo Airshow weekend for 2014. Changing from a late spring airshow to an early summer airshow should mean sunnier and warmer days for spectators, volunteers, aircrews and vendors alike and the hope that the better weather means bluer skies as well!

The 2013 CF-18 Demo Hornet in afterburner on take-off, left.
The Snowbirds will thrill and excite young and old, right.

This year the Waterloo Airshow spectators will see the return of a number of performers from previous years with a few new performers to spice up the event and pique the interest of aviation nuts. Regulars such as the Canadian Forces Snowbirds and the Royal Canadian Air Force CF-18 2014 Demonstration Hornet flown by the 2014 demo pilot, Capt. Adam "Manik" Runge.

The beautiful B-17 from the Yankee Air Museum and you can fly in this aircraft at the airshow or in London, Ontario July 26th or September 27th.

New to the Waterloo Airshow is the Yankee Air Museum's beautiful Boeing B-17G Flying Fortress, the "Yankee Lady." This stunning example of the B-17 was first delivered and flew with the US Army Air Corps but was then transferred to the US Coast Guard in 1946. From there she also flew at NAS Elizabeth City, NC and then was owned by several companies over the years including Ace Smelting Inc, Phoenix, AZ; Fairchild Aerial Surveys, Los Angeles, CA;, Aero Services Corp, Philadelphia, PA; Beigert Brothers, Shickley, NB, Aircraft Specialties Inc, Mesa, AZ; Globe Air Inc, Mesa, AZ and finally the Yankee Air Museum in Yspilanti, MI. During her stint with Aircraft Specialties, she was flown to Hawaii in 1969 and appeared in the movie "Tora! Tora! Tora."

The Canadian Harvard Aircraft Association's Canadian Harvard Aerobatic Team, left.
One of CHAA's 75 year old Harvard aircraft, right.

The venerable Canadian Harvard Aircraft Association (CHAA), celebrating the 75th anniversary of the Harvard in Canada, will be represented by their precision formation Harvard team, CHAT (Canadian Harvard Aerobatic Team). Pilots Dave Hewitt, Pete Spence and Kent Beckham will "Turn up the ROAR" and amaze spectators with their beautiful aerobatic display, flying these radial engine World War II trainers in an aerobatic, loud but beautiful ballet.

The L-29 and its unique camo paint scheme will
screech across the flightline during the airshow.

One of the co-producers of the airshow, Richard Cooper, will fly his stunning example of the L-29 Delfin from Viper North. Coop will put the L-29 through it's paces and will show off the maneuverability and agility of this former Russian training aircraft. You can book a flight in the L-29 through the Jet Aircraft Museum by visiting their website.

The Jet Aircraft Museum/Hammond Aviation T-33 Mako Shark is always popular and will hunt above the skies of Waterloo looking for interested people to join the museum and who want that jet flight experience.

Speaking of the Jet Aircraft Museum, they will make an appearance once again with their beautiful and eye-catching Hammond Aviation, Canadair built T-33 Silver Star, the Mako Shark, flown by Derek Hammond and Ray Thwaites. This iconic former Canadian Air Force jet trainer, painted in a very noticeable deep sky blue and white, is a hit with young and old alike with it's highly visible shark mouth speeding across the airshow flightline. Drop by their booth and purchase your 2015 Cash & Dream Flights Lottery Calendar for only $20 and you could win a flight in one of 3 aircraft, including the Mako!

Kent Pietsch has to have nerves of steal in order to be able to land his Cadet on a moving vehicle, left. Kent's graceful display in the cadet, right.

One of the most enjoyable and entertaining airshow pilots of today, Kent Pietsch, will make you laugh and shock you at the same time with his various displays throughout the airshow including the landing of his Interstate Cadet on the roof of a moving RV, performing an aerobatic routine from 6000' with the engine shut off and his comedy routine of a drunk who steals an airplane. Even highly experienced pilots are in awe of his ability to make all this look easy.

Gord Price, even as a senior citizen, performs aerobatics like a young man, but until he steps out of the cockpit, you'd never know he was in his mid 70s!

Senior citizen aerobatic pilot, Gord Price, will throw his magnificent Yak 50 through the sky like a 25 year old test pilot would a modern fighter jet. In his mid 70s, Price does things most pilots would never consider doing and he does it with ease and a smile. The Yak 50 Gord flies was built in 1972 and is serial #01.

Local pilot, Wayne Hadath, in his appropriately named F1 Rocket, left. The aerobatic ability of both Mike Wiskus and his Pitts will impress and thrill spectators, right.

Other performers include local resident and pilot, Wayne Hadath in his F1 Rocket, the Lucas Oil Skydivers, Indy Boys Jet Powered School Bus and Michael Wiskus in his Lucas Oil Pitts S-1-11B, an airshow performer who flies a high energy, high "G" aerobatic routine.

The beautiful Commemorative Air Force, Tuskegee Airmen P-51C, left, "Red Tail,"
and their Arizona Wing B-17, right, "Sentimental Journey," will grace the static line-up.

Rounding out the show are the static aircraft that will be appearing including the Commemorative Air Force, Tuskegee Airmen P-51C "Red Tail," Yankee Warrior B-25D Mitchell, Commemorative Air Force, Arizona Wing, B-17 "Sentimental Journey," AC-47 "Spooky" gunship, C-46 Curtiss Commando "Tinker Belle," Jet Aircraft Museum's de Havilland Vampire, Air Heritage Museum's C-123K Provider, and the Lake Erie Warbirds TBM Avenger.

Yankee Air Museum's B-25 "Yankee Warrior," right, will also be on static display along with the city of Monroe, NC and Warriors and Warbirds Inc's big C-46 Curtiss Commando, left.

Make the trip to Southern Ontario and come to the Waterloo Airshow on June 28th & 29th, 2014. You'll see vintage aircraft and jet fighter aircraft alike and will enjoy a great show, with plenty to see and do for all ages.

One of the more popular aircraft at the airshow is the Jet Aircraft Museum/Hammond Aviation T-33 Silver Star "Mako Shark."
