Warbirds North - Part II

By Kevin Moore, Contributing Editor & Photographer
Watford, Ontario, Canada

Harvard line-up of aircraft from CWH and CHAA during the 2011 airshow.

Last week we reviewed some of the aircraft that will attend and participate in the CWH Hamilton Airshow 2012 including the CAF B-29, B-24 and Helldiver along with the Military Aviation Museums B-17, Wildcat, Skyraider and Avenger. These fabulous vintage aircraft will join the list of CWH aircraft and fighters from Vintage Wings of Canada.

The Jet Aircraft Museum/Hammond Aviation Canadair T-33 "Mako Shark" will perform several passes (left). The Great War Flying Museum will participate with some of their replica World War I fighters such as the Fokker Dr. I (right).

Other museums that will participate in the airshow are the Jet Aircraft Museum (JAM) with their JAM/Hammond Aviation Canadair T-33 "Mako Shark," the Canadian Harvard Aircraft Association with their 4-plane Harvard formation & Canadian Harvard Aerobatic Team flying their aerobatic formation performance, and The Great War Flying Museum with their World War I replica aircraft including the Fokker Dr.I, Sopwith 1 1/2 Strutter and their Royal Aircraft Factory SE5A's.

Aerobatic civilian acts include Pete McLeod flying his high powered and agile Edge 540 and Matt Younkin in his Beech 18. Individual aircraft attending the event are Tom Siimes North American Harvard MK IV and Cam Harrod with his Fleet Finch.

Always a joy to watch and listen to at airshows, CWHs B-25J Mitchell (left) and the affectionately known Lizzie or Lysander (right).

Rounding out the World War II flying aircraft of the show are aircraft from the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum collection which include the Avro Lancaster, North American B-25J Mitchell, Fairey Firefly MK V, Westland (National Steel Car) Lysander MK III, North American Harvard MK IV, Consolidated PBY-5A Canso, Beechcraft Expeditor, Douglas Dakota, Fleet Fort, Boeing Stearman, DH Chipmunk, Fairchild Cornell, and the DH Tiger Moth.

One of the most beautiful jet aircraft on the airshow circuit today,
the Vintage Wings of Canada, Canadair F-86 "Hawk One" Sabre.

The Royal Canadian Air Force will be represented by the 2012 Demonstration CF-18 Hornet and the always loved and spectacular Snowbirds Demonstration Team flying the venerable Canadair Tutor. Along with these RCAF airplanes you'll see two other former RCAF jet aircraft including JAM's Canadair built T-33 and Vintage Wings Canadair built F-86 Sabre.

The A-10 Thunderbolt (left) and the RCAF CT-156 Harvard II (right).

On static display will be the Fairchild Republic A-10 Thunderbolt (Warthog) from the US Air Force, the Lockheed C-130J Hercules from the Royal Canadian Air Force along with the CT-156 Harvard II and another T-33 from the Jet Aircraft Museum. CWH will also have a large assortment of static museum aircraft on display.

Vintage Wings of Canada's beautiful Lysander. Hopefully, we'll see this
and the CWH Lysander in formation together during the show.

The show is expected to be one of the largest in Canada this year and the museum has hired a specialized parking consultant who has addressed parking and bussing issues which will make parking your vehicle and transportation to the airport a simple and quick trip.

You can purchase tickets at the gate on airshow day or online and you can now also purchase your tickets up to 5:00pm on the Friday before the airshow so you know what the weekend weather will be like. This will help ensure you don't lose out on purchasing tickets you can't use due to inclement, non-flyable weather. For the photographer in you a "ramp pass" is available for those close-up, intimate shots with these fabulous aircraft. For the really serious photographer, a "photo pass" can be purchased but they are limited in number and sometimes sell out quickly so check the website for details.

Under restoration but getting close to completion is CWHs Bristol Bolingbroke (left). Scheduled to undergo restoration very soon is CWHs Canadian Navy Tracker (right).

Canadian Warplane Heritage is Canada's largest flying museum. Several aircraft are currently undergoing restoration with more restorations to flying condition scheduled for the coming years. Those airplanes currently undergoing restoration, or scheduled to be restored, include the Bristol Bolingbroke, the Grumman Avenger, Grumman Tracker, Avro Anson, Cessna Crane, Cessna L-19 Bird Dog and the Beech Musketeer.

Sporting a Rolls-Royce Griffon, the Fairey Firefly MK 6 from CWH, with its distinctive growl, will show off her lines during the show (left). Vintage Wings of Canada's P-40N Kittyhawk on start-up, with a puff of smoke from the exhaust (right).

This could be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see four rare 4-engine airplanes in the skies together. A sight and sound to behold and remember. Who knows, with a formation of 4-engine bombers and a gaggle of fighter aircraft escorting the bombers, you could see the largest peacetime gathering of World War II warbirds in Canada in more than three generations. Don't miss out on this display of Warbirds North!
