THE VIRGINIA FESTIVAL OF FLIGHT

Aerial view of the Virginia Festival of Flight Fly-in

The Virginia Festival of Flight kicked off events at its new home at the Suffolk, Virginia Airport, (SFQ), on June 14 and 15, 2008. Both fly-in and automobile traffic was moderate for this fly-in only event. The cost and complications of adding even a short airshow led organizers to limit the event to forums, static displays, rides and vendor sales. The Virginia Festival of Flight demonstrates that there is plenty of interest in regional flying events where aviators can gather, learn and just enjoy the community of fliers.

Arrival at SFQ was extremely well orchestrated with a multitude of volunteers expertly directing ground activity. I hesitate to name individuals because to do so would be to make some seem more important than others. Despite that we do want to recognize the tireless efforts of Fly-in director Judy Sparks and her entire team. From the local events to the biggest fly-ins, without the volunteers these events would be impossible.

Here is a selection of photos from the Virginia Festival of Flight 2008. If you missed it mark your calendar for next year.

Cirrus aircraft at the Virginia Festival of Flight
Cirrus was on site to show off their latest offerings. Company representatives said that we should look for their production version of its new LSA aircraft sometime around Oshkosh 2009. The pre-production LSA has been seen at major shows. In the meantime there was no shortage of interest in current production aircraft from Cirrus.

Volunteer at the Virginia Festival of Flight
At every turn volunteers worked to make sure everyone had a safe and hassle free day. Coordination of ground operations on 121.75 helped keep unicom uncluttered and moved arrivals quickly to parking. Volunteers posted large signs to alert arriving aircraft of the frequency.

Citabria with flight school banner at the Virginia Festival of Flight
A number of flight schools were on hand promoting everything from LSA training to career path programs. Chesapeake Aviation offers tail-wheel training in its pristine Citabria.

There was plenty of LSA activity at the Festival of Flight. Here, a Legend Cub departs at the end of day one.

This 1942 Ryan Aeronautical ST3KR PT-22 was a real attention getter on the flight line. This was a one of a kind for the show.

The graceful lines of Brian Campbell's Extra 300 are shown here as the aircraft waits for its next aerobatic flight.
