The National Museum of the United States Air Force is located at Wright Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton, Ohio. It has hundreds of aircraft on static display… mostly inside where they, and the visitors who come by the thousands to see them, are protected from the weather. Just to give you some perspective, there is a B-52 bomber, a B-One bomber, and a B-Two bomber along with dozens of other full-size aircraft in just one room of the museum. All are displayed artfully with theatrical lighting and many are set up as if they were in actual combat. Many are displayed as if in flight, suspended in air, like when they were flying a mission. Visitors are free to take as many pictures as they like.

The museum sections are broken down into various eras of flight from WW-I through the Gulf Wars. You’d expect to see the vintage goods on display, but even the most modern airplanes are there as well. The once super-secret SR-71 Blackbird, the F-22 Raptor, our most advanced fighter, as well as the F-117 NightFighter and other stealth aircraft are placed where you can get within touching distance. (Touching is not permitted in most cases, however.)

The indoor displays are huge and can take several hours just to walk through. By all means, wear comfortable shoes. But scattered throughout the displays are small feature films showing actual action footage and details of the aircraft nearby. You can rest without being bored.

If you want to experience a spectacular motion picture, there’s even an IMAX theater where aircraft-related movies run almost constantly. The IMAX is itself an experience.

This is a world-class exhibit… and it’s 100% free. You don’t even have to pay to park. The museum is open nearly every day from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm, but if you need to know if they’ll be open when you arrive, call 937-258-1218 or visit their website for information.
