THE PACIFIC COAST AIR MUSEUM
By David Green, Contributing Editor
Southern California is home to several interesting air museums including the Pacific Coast Air Museum in Santa Rosa. This is a static museum which displays only non-flying aircraft. They have approximately 26 aircraft including the F-14 Tomcat, S-2 Tracker and the HU-16 Albatross, additional exhibits, and a small indoor museum with a gift shop. The museum gift store sells t-shirts, hats, pins, videos, aircraft kits and other aviation novelties.

The Grumman HU-16E Albatross is one of the many detailed restorations the museum has. This aircraft has a great history. HU-16E Albatrosses were in the U.S. Coast Guard fleet from 1951 to 1983. These aircraft were used on many types of missions. They were used as search platforms looking for lost boaters or downed aircraft and to locate sinking fishing boats. If they were needed, de-watering pumps were dropped by parachute. Crews launched day or night. The aircraft were used to check on ship collisions or to locate vessels with ill crewmen. Many times the aircraft escorted helicopters to complete rescues, and rarely this amphibian landed on water to make a rescue. It is crewed by Crew Chief, Duane Coppock.

Also on display is the S-2 Tracker. Originally designated the S2F Tracker, several versions were eventually built that included the original anti-submarine, an electronics measures version and a cargo version. The first production version was designated the S-2A Tracker and became operational in 1954. The S-2 family of aircraft served the United States Navy for several decades and has also served many other nations in continuously improved and updated versions.

PCAMs aircraft served the USN until 1972 when the California Department of Forestry acquired 19 S-2As from the Department of Defense. The CDF S-2As were converted for fire fighting and placed in service for the 1973 fire season. The S-2A was an efficient and reliable part of CDFs air fire fighting force. In recent years, CDF has been upgrading its airtanker fleet with newer, faster and more maneuverable turbine S-2T aircraft. This aircraft is crewed by Crew Chief: Garry Beverlin.

Westinghouse J34 Turbojet Engine Cutaway Another great exhibit at the museum is the Westinghouse J34 Turbojet engine cutaway for training use / display. Developed by Westinghouse Electric Corp in the late 1940's, the J34 engine was an enlarged version of the earlier Westinghouse J30. The J34 produced over 3000 pounds of thrust depending on the engine series and was twice as powerful as its predecessor. Several different series J34's were used in Air force experimental aircraft during 1948-1953; the XF-85 Goblin, the Mc Donnell XF-88A and the Douglas X-3 Stiletto.

Engine Information;

Compressor: 11 stage axial flow
Turbine: two-stage axial flow
